Since the foundation of the town until 1522, mineral water was used only for baths that took 5 – 12 hours. In 1522, drinking cures started to be used. In these times, excessive quantity of mineral water was used for drinking, about 40 – 60 cups per day (1 cup = 160 ml of water). Drinking cures were combined with long lasting baths in hot mineral water. Thanks to these drastic methods, not only the town hospital but also the town cemetery was enlarged.
In the 18th century, progressive doctor Jan Becher led the first analysis about the mineral waters of Karlovy Vary. Since this time, the patients have been cured according to their individual diagnose. The disproportionate high portions have been reduced to 12-15 cups a day. Dr. Becher recommended to drink the water near the springs where it has better effect. A completely new order has been brought into the spa life when the patients gathered at specific time by the spring, promenaded with the spa cups and drank mineral water.
Since the 19th century, the spa treatments have been completed with diet system, fenny baths, wraps and showers.
